Title: Six Years after the Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement: An Assessment
Abstract: The Eastern Sudan Peace Agreement (ESPA) between the Sudan government and the Eastern Front was signed in October 2006. This agreement was brokered by the Eritrean government. Unlike the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the Darfur Peace Agreement, and the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, the ESPA had little international clout or support. For many observers, the agreement mainly reflected the desires of the Sudanese and Eritrean governments to resolve the "low-intensity conflict" in eastern Sudan and was not a serious effort to address the chronic problems facing this region of the country.
