Title: A REVIEW OF MODERN TRAFFIC CONTROL EQUIPMENT
Abstract: Many different types of traffic control systems may be purchased today and the traffic engineer is faced with a bewildering array of options. Technical papers produced describing traffic control systems usually show how the particular system under tests is in fact superior to other systems and hence this compounds the problem even further. A tendency has developed for each country to develop a unique system and to concentrate on the home market. Due to differing traffic regulations driving habits and physical environments between countries there is little wonder that the range of equipment is so large. This paper attempts to clarify and summarise the properties common to different types of systems. No attempt has been made to provide a critical analysis of the various philosophies adopted, but some trends are discussed. In the future, there will continue to be a wide variety of approaches to the solution of traffic control problems, but the technology available will dictate the most economical and reliable equipment, and the main area for exercising individuality is in the software.
