Title: FUTURE TECHNOLOGICAL PROSPECTS IN TRAFFIC CONTROL
Abstract: This item is technical note no 1 and was presented at the symposium on computer control of transport sponsored by the institution of engineers, Australia, Sydney 1981. The progress of technology, particularly electronics and computing technology, has resulted in increased capability in current traffic signal equipment. This technical note examines some possible directions for future development of traffic control technology. The topics discussed briefly include future prospects for the traffic signal controller, vehicle detection, signals and signs and motorist information systems. The future prospects in the area of traffic control will be for more efficient traffic control. The degree of improvement which can be made will depend considerably on whether communications between the driver and the traffic control system can be improved. The technological capability to provide such communications links and the computing power required to use them is available now. The choice to use these tools rests with governments, car manufacturers and consumers (A). (TRRL)
