Title: Leveraging the Use of Pavement Management Results
Abstract: Airport Pavement Management Systems (APMS) in the United States have been in use since the 1980’s. Traditionally, the objectives of these programs were to document pavement condition and develop maintenance and rehabilitation programs, with the goal of maximizing the benefit received from the expenditure of pavement repair dollars. In recent years, as increasing attention has been paid to the aging airport pavement infrastructure, more emphasis has been placed on leveraging the use of pavement management results to increase recognition of the pavement-related needs of the aviation system and to lobby for the funding necessary to preserve the pavement infrastructure. There are potentially many users of pavement management information; however, historically in aviation applications the emphasis has been placed on generating outputs for the engineering and maintenance staff. More of an effort needs to be made to leverage the usefulness of the pavement management data by reaching a broader audience, and further thought must be given to the methods used to relay the information. The Georgia Department of Transportation-Aviation Programs office case study is presented to illustrate how one agency expanded its use of APMS information and is employing innovative techniques to inform a broader audience of pavement-related issues.
