Title: INTEGRATING MULTI-COMMUNITY INTERESTS : A MULTI-AGENCY PARTNERSHIP IN ARIZONA HAS BROUGHT HUGE BENEFITS FOR TRAVELLERS
Abstract: This article describes a remarkable six-year-old transportation partnership of some 24 different agencies determined to improve traffic management in Maricopa County, Arizona, which is one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S. The project manager reports that despite some conflicts between jurisdictions, the partnership has been able to deploy a significant part of a shared system including overhead message signs, coordinated traffic signals, traffic information for the public, a traffic management team for emergencies and traffic management for special events. The AZTech ITS Model Deployment Initiative (MDI) is finishing its seven-year plan to develop an integrated ITS system for Phoenix.
