Abstract: This article provides an overview of California's railways as determined by a 2006 readership poll into the best United States railways state by state. While third in overall landmass in the nation, the state has the second most route-miles at 5,800 and is the most populous state. Much of California's traffic comes from its major seaports in Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Oakland; however, the ports of San Diego, San Francisco, and Oxnard are increasing their container processing. The article closes with a list of notable rails and rail-related landmarks in California, such as Southern California's mountain crossings, Gaviota, San Francisco, Donner Pass, the San Joaquin Valley, and the Los Angeles Union Station.
