Abstract: Many expect Californias major passenger train routes, including the state-supported Capitol Corridor from San Jose to Auburn, the San Joaquin from Sacramento to Bakersfield, and the Pacific Surfliner from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, to become more popular in the coming years as the states freeways become more congested. Amtrak began expanding its California routes in the early 1970s, when there was little demand for rail service, but its gamble paid off. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) helped make these routes successful by channeling federal funding through transit gas tax money. In addition, Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta has said that it is important that states take a leading role in funding passenger trains.
