Abstract: This article discusses how passenger cars may have led the way in hybrid transportation in recent years, but commercial vehicles (CVs) are beginning to experience plenty of diesel-electric applications. However, the challenges are slightly different for CVs, given the higher vehicle masses involved. In this world, the likes of aerodynamic aids, low rolling resistance tires and increased driver training are all well and good, but the use of electric motors in conjunction with traditional internal combustion (IC) engines still offers more potential. Pure electrification of trucks is not a viable option, given the required size of a suitable battery pack, so hybridization is seen by many as the great hope in improving overall truck efficiency and reducing fuel economy and carbon dioxide levels.
