Title: WITH FUEL COSTS FLYING HIGH, FLEET OWNERS TRY HYBRID POWER
Abstract: Hybrid work trucks, with engines that can save up to 60% on fuel as compared to other models, are being tested for construction, utility, and military applications. These diesel-electric trucks use their electric motors for acceleration and their inline, diesel engines for cruising. An onboard computer makes decisions regarding how much power to draw from the engine and electric motor, as well as allocating recharge power. The system is monitored in real-time through digital telematics. Although the hybrids can be costly, proponents note that diesel-electric technology will soon become commercially viable.
