Title: AN OVERVIEW OF AREA CONTROL SYSTEMS AND MOTOR VEHICLE NAVIGATION/ ROUTE GUIDANCE DEVELOPMENTS IN JAPAN
Abstract: This paper describes the state of art and recent developments in area control systems of traffic signals and motor vehicle navigation/ route guidance systems in Japan. There are currently 74 cities which have area control systems in Japan. The manner of control is rather conventional and is basically of the traffic- adaptive program selection type. Three systems for navigation/ route guidance of motor vehicles have been proposed. CASCS is the pioneer system of dynamic route guidance in urban networks. RACS and AMTICS are recent proposals.
