Title: ROUTE GUIDANCE SYSTEMS. IN: HANDBOOK OF TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL
Abstract: The popularity of route guidance systems has grown tremendously due to the expansion of the internet and in-vehicle electronics. Route guidance systems will also have a major influence on transportation management as they become increasingly integrated with the roadside infrastructure. There are many alternative forms of route guidance, including in-vehicle route guidance, stand-alone systems such as internet-provided turn-by-turn directions, autonomous route guidance performed by a software-based system that uses a static map database and dynamic route guidance systems that provide information based on the influence of prevailing traffic conditions. This paper reviews each of these types of route guidance systems, and explores the future potential of the systems. Route guidance systems are predicted to achieve widespread use and significant market penetration if challenges such as improved mapping accuracy, displays and dynamic traffic assignment can be resolved.
