Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the ideas on public transport in London, UK, supported by the organization Transport for London. The speaker proposes better use of local amenities to reduce the number of journeys and better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians. Buses are being refurbished to extend their life and low-floor buses purchased for accessibility. The use of technology to bring about the cashless and improved passenger information, both in general and at bus stops, is promoted. Congestion charging is being considered. Rail transport should be able to provide a frequent, metro-style service within the city. River ferries across and along the Thames should expand their services to provide for commuter use as well as the tourist trade. Transport plays an important role in regeneration and social inclusion. For the covering abstract see ITRD E115260.
