Abstract: Current levels of bus patronage in Europe are considered. The situation is found to be worse in the UK than other European countries. The benefits of buses for environmental and social reasons are discussed. The oppportunities presented by telematics to the operation of bus networks are examined. It is concluded that buses will remain the dominant public transport mode but must be a) available when required, b) easy to use, c) comfortable and clean, d) offer a smooth journey and e) reliable. Buses must also be part of a comprehensive urban system with a clear strategy. For the covering abstract see IRRD 874870.
