Abstract: Motor vehicles deaths increased 1% in 1988 over 1987. The 1988 total is estimated at 49,000 compared with 48,400 in 1987. Travel in 1988 increased for the eighth year in a row. The mileage death rate in 1988 is 2.46. Injuries causing disability beyond the day of the accident are estimated at about 1.8 million for 1988, with less serious injuries probably equaling twice this number. Many factors determine the annual result. Factors such as increased vehicle travel, more vehicles and drivers, greater speeds, and more lightweight cars add to the fatality total. Factors that offset this increase include improved vehicle safety, limited access highways, driver education, etc. Changes in regional statistics are also discussed. Urban-rural fatality experience is discussed, and the increase in rural fatalities is noted. The type of accidents causing death are also discussed. Comments are made on the age of fatality victims.
