Abstract: The present and future possibilities of public transport are described. It is argued that the accessibility of public transport, its speed and reliability must be improved in order to meet the quality of service demanded. Possible improvements for international, national, regional and urban public transport are mentioned. Certain technical features which are all aimed at improving the quality of service are dealt with. Among other things the velocity of trains, computer controlled guidance systems and automated public transport are mentioned. The article concludes with a summary of points which might contribute to improving public transport. (TRRL)
