Title: Formulaic Approach to the Generation of Flow Profiles
Abstract: This paper describes research carried out to derive formulae that could be used for the automatic generation and seeding of traffic data profiles. The authors used experience gained and data collected over 36 months of the operation of a large scale Traffic Management and Coordination system at the National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) for England. The purpose of this particular research project was twofold: to identify sufficient commonality between different links such that a generic ‘link profile formula’ could be established; and secondly to use this generic formula to produce profiles that would be accurate enough to use in place of the regular profiles, on those occasions when the regular ‘data driven’ profiles were unavailable. The authors conclude that the formulae given provide remarkably accurate synthetic profiles, which could indeed be used in place of regular profiles to provide the level of detail required.
