Title: Data Driven Traffic Profiling for Real-Time Operations at the National Traffic Control Centre
Abstract: This article describes some of the research that is being conducted by the National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) in England. The NTCC collects both flow and journey time data from over 3,500 sensors across the motorway and major road network. Historic data profiles are used to determine deviations from normality (detecting events on the network), potential spare capacity on the network, predictions of flow and travel times, and evaluation of responses and detection. The system was originally designed with 19 different day types, but in the light of experience and using data driven methodology a new set of 11 day types, a new profile updating scheme and the concept of reserve profiles have been investigated and built into the NTCC system. The authors describe the investigations which are based on the analysis of real data, rather than being purely theoretical. They also consider the need for real-time applications on a functioning system. For example, this system can be used in a real-world setting when estimating the impact of road construction on normal traffic flow.
