Abstract: Like all the former members of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has a broad gauge rail network that is mainly oriented towards Moscow. Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) is aware of gaps in the network that need to be plugged, but most importantly, has also noted the rapid increase in rail freight traffic through the Alataw Pass since this first connection with China's standard gauge network opened in 1994. This article examines the work that is underway on the first section of Kazakhstan Railway's ambitious plan to build a 3083 km railway across the country, with the objective to create the first standard gauge railway from China to Europe.
