Abstract: Transverse cracks are formed in asphalt pavements at low temperatures. Factors leading to transverse cracks include stiffness of pavement and binder, temperature conditions and traffic loading. The author discusses pavement design based on the stiffness properties of asphalt mixtures and bitumen. Penetration index can be used in studying transverse cracks. About 10 years ago a test road was constructed in northern Finland, in which different types of bitumen were used, and their effect on the formation of transverse cracks was investigated. The results obtained were, according to the author, in accordance with the theory. (TRRL)
