Title: A study of clearway operation in metropolitan Adelaide
Abstract: A before and after study of five sections of clearway in the metropolitan area of Adelaide was carried out. The before phase was completed in July, 1972 and the after phase in April, 1973. Five drivers familiar with the sections of roadway which were investigated took part in both phases of the study. A measure of secondary task performance was obtained in addition to heart rate, respiration rate, speed and acceleration noise, while the drivers negotiated all five sections of clearway under peak hour conditions. The results indicate that in Adelaide traffic conditions there is some benefit to the driver from the introduction of a clearway, if the change permits an additional traffic lane to be marked on the pavement. The evidence also suggests that greater benefit may be obtained if and when traffic densities increase (a).
