Title: Traffic Behaviour at a Signalised Intersection in Metropolitan Lagos
Abstract: This paper is aimed at evaluating traffic behavior at different peak periods at the Maryland Interchange in Metropolitan Lagos. Traffic behavior at signalized intersections in metropolitan Lagos could be predictably categorized into three periods viz morning, interpeak and evening peak periods. Most of these intersections which hitherto were unsignalised became motorists’ nightmare with chaotic traffic overwhelming the traffic wardens deployed there. In a bid to reduce this hardship, the state government deployed modern traffic lights at these intersections including the Maryland interchange with a view at calming the traffic. Data used for this paper was collated from a field study carried out in April 2013 by the Masters’ students of the School of Transport, Lagos State University. Classified Traffic volume counts were conducted for three days at defined Screen lines (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday). Other components of the study include: Green and Red Time observations, Land use examination, delay measurements, speed and Traffic peak period characteristics. Findings show that the Maryland interchange has not demonstrated a significant change in the traffic situation since the installation of the new traffic signals, with a service utilization averaging at (0.6) ρ<1 at peak periods which signifies that the traffic situtation at the junction could have been smoth and perfect, but for the overwhelming high traffic volume. The paper concluded that the major cause of congestion on the interchange is largely due to poor management of Land use, high level of Motorization
