Title: Case studies in the various aspects of overlay design and application of modified asphalt products
Abstract: The method used for this case study program, can design the necessary layer thickness of an overlay, using standard as well as modified asphalt products, required to extend the life of a road to carry the predicted traffic. In order to determine the effects of bitumen modification on the mechanical properties of asphaltic mixes a number of tests have been conducted by the laboratories of Ooms Avenhorn BV and the Road Research Centre of the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The paper describes the results of these studies and gives a brief description of the structural performance models for flexible pavements, called serpem (sustentational energy response based pavement evaluation model). The paper also describes the basic steps involved in the design method adopted and it outlines a procedure to assess the structural condition of a pavement by using falling weight deflection measurement data. The paper gives the economics and the prime cost effectiveness aspects of overlays considering asphaltic concretes with standard and modified binders (a).
