Title: Mechanistic pavement design with real material properties
Abstract: The AUSTROADS Pavement Design Guide was published in 1987. The Design Guide moved away from traditional methods and established procedures based on the engineering properties of pavement materials. Some guidelines were also included in the Guide which gave indicative values to be used when actual figures are not available. Recent developments in measurement technology and the availability of cheap computing power made the accurate measurement of some of the engineering properties available for practising engineers. The engineering properties have a significant influence on the pavement structure and therefore have financial consequences both in terms of maintenance and construction costs. The objective of this paper is to summarise some of the most important aspects and factors of the current pavement design practice, based on extensive design and material testing conducted recently. In the second part of the paper the workability of asphalt mixes is discussed and illustrated with laboratory test results.
