Title: A COMPLETE FUZZY LOGIC CONTROL APPROACH FOR EXISTING TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS
Abstract: Traffic control applications need both the analysis of detected traffic flow and evaluation of current environmental conditions. Due to individual behaviour of traffic participants the traffic flow analysis is subject to uncertainties. In addition, the inherent uncertainty of traffic data and weather condition does not allow to set up a complete mathematical model to solve traffic control problems. Thus, only empirical and heuristic approaches can be used in practice. Fuzzy Logic is a technology that is highly suitable to be applied in the following case. The paper shows the architecture of a complete fuzzy logic control strategy to be applied in existing traffic control systems on a multi-lane road with variable traffic signs. The system was initiated by the State Traffic Department of Baden-Wurttemberg to optimize an existing traffic control system of the B27 state highway between Stuttgart city, Stuttgart airport, and Tuebingen.
