Title: ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMME IN TANZANIA. CO-OPERATION BETWEEN MINISTRY OF WORKS (MOW), TANZANIA AND THE NORWEGIAN PUBLICWAY
Abstract: The Norwegian agency for development co-operation, NORAD, has been engaged in road projects in Tanzania for more than thirty years. In the 1990s this work is in the form of an institutional co-operation between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and its sister institutions in developing countries such as Tanzania, Botswana and Zambia. The paper presents this co-operation and achievements accomplished. A national road safety programme has been developed and the paper details some of the activities undertaken within this framework. Among them are the development and implementation of an accident recording and analysis system, a road design manual, and a system for road safety audit, guidelines for traffic engineering and management. The co-operation also includes activities such as an axle load control programme, a new driver training and licensing system together with activities concerning enforcement, education and safety campaigns.
