Abstract: This short article describes a comprehensive study of road accidents and safety in the Ivory Coast that was begun on 15 April 1983 and ended on 15 December 1984. The objectives of the study were to: (a) design and implement a comprehensive system for accident data collection and treatment; (b) analyse in detail the characteristics and causes of accidents, on the basis of existing data and of complementary investigations in urban areas and on rural roads; (c) determine the social and economic costs of accidents; and (d) to identify the most appropriate measures to improve safety. A brief description of the methods used is provided, followed by an outline of the types of survey undertaken and the suggestions made by the study to improve road safety. A summary indicating which of these proposals has actually been implemented or the reasons for not doing so is also provided. (TRRL)
