Abstract: The model is described and the results are given of a computer simulation technique to investigate the operating characteristics of a 4-way stop highway intersection. The study shows that for the assumptions made the capacity of a 4-way stop junction with single lane approaches is approximately 1600 vehicles per hour when there are equal flows on both intersecting highways. When flows are not equal on both highways then mean delays are reduced but the lower volume of flow suffers considerably increased delay so reducing junction capacity. Comparisons with delays obtained using signal and priority control show that at low volumes of flow overall delays are similar. With the 4-way stop intersection maximum delays are lower than with normal priority control.
