The author relates that in order to support the increased demand for services as a result of the increase in fuel costs, as well as covering operational costs, the transit industry needs to look to alternate funding or revenue sources. These may include capturing value from third party use of infrastructure and vehicles, raising and earmarking taxes, congestion charging, carbon-based fees, and public private partnerships. Each of these alternatives is examined, with the author concluding that buyers and sellers of transit equipment goods and services will need to change their marketing strategies if service levels, quality, and reliability are to be maintained.Read More
