Title: DEGREE OF SATURATION CRITERIA FOR LOS AT SIGNALISED INTERSECTIONS
Abstract: The 1994 Highway Capacity Manual uses average vehicular stopped delay as the determinant for level of service at signalized intersections. The manual and other related standards have suggested measurements of delay on a lane basis. In India, vehicles do not move in files and therefore delays cannot be defined for individual lanes. Delays measured at different approaches of a number of intersections in Delhi indicate that the limits for various levels of service specified in HCM (1994) do not hold good for mixed traffic of the type prevailing in India. The parameter like Degree of Saturation ( DOS ), on the other hand, is a more appropriate index of performance of a signalized intersection. The data collected at signalized intersections in Delhi have been analyzed and the ranges of DOS have been determined for various levels of service.
