Abstract: This article presents the results of a survey conducted by STUVA (Research Association for Underground Transportation Facilities www.stuva.de) of recently completed and pending tunnels and sewer structures in Germany at end of 2000. Projects are limited to man- entry tunnels. About 64% of overall volume was trenchless urban rail facilities, of which about 83% used shotcrete methods. Road tunnels are on the increase, for example the Rennsteig Tunnel for the new A71, 2 7.9-km. tubes for a major north-south connection. Long-distance rail tunnels fluctuate in importance as new projects are proposed and then completed. A large number of rail and road tunnels are proposed. Road tunnels dominate in the old Federal states (the West). New ones in the East are still in pre-planning stages.
