Abstract: The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) has allocated #39 million to the East London Line (ELL) project in the UK. Companies have been invited to pre-qualify to bid for a design, construct, maintain and fund concession for all ELL extensions. The funding allows preparations to be made for the railway extension and for property acquisition. The project will involve cooperation between the new national transport structure, the new London administrative structure and London underground. Three extensions have been proposed: northwards from Whitechapel, southwards at New Cross Gate, and southwest from Surrey Quays. The benefits of the new cross-London and orbital services are discussed.
