Abstract: A look at 10 representative U.S. cities shows that major efforts are being made to revive rail transit systems, particularly in Los Angeles. But more planning mistakes are being made than the urban light rail movement can reasonably afford in a time of increasingly limited transit budgets. The ten cities and their rail development plans studied are: Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Denver, Baltimore, and Cleveland.
