Title: INTER-MODAL TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICES: STRATEGIES AND MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
Abstract: European integration causes an increase in interregional travelling on all transport modes. All sorts of transportation networks have reached their capacity limits. The effects are visible in an increasing number of critical links and in the frequent presence of traffic problems affecting each transport mode not only at peak hour. On the other hand, as widely agreed, sustainable mobility is a key factor in prospering societies. Regulatory measures are unpopular and often do not tackle the problems efficiently as side effects cannot be foreseen properly and reaction times are quite long. Thus traffic authorities and transport operators are continuously searching for adequate tools to improve the exploitation of their networks and to provide their customers with useful services. Multi- and inter-modal traffic information services as developed by the project INFOTEN (European Commission DG XIII Telematics Applications Programme) are providing comfortable access to traffic information on any mode of transport in a combined way. This could induce travellers to make best use of the available transportation networks and systems and thereby satisfy their mobility aims in an economically and ecologically viable manner. The information services hereby act as mediator between the three interest groups, public administration, transport operators and end-users. For the covering abstract see ITRD E109380.
