Title: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRANSPORT AND LAND USE
Abstract: A premise of much recent thinking on transport policy is that, if current trends in energy consumption and harmful emissions are to be reversed, it will be necessary to reduce use of the private car. If this is to happen, then public transport must offer a genuine alternative to the door to door convenience of the car. The article addresses the need for land use planning and the relationship between transport and land use. In particular it notes the trend towards developing in low density areas. A cyclical pattern of car use influencing decentralization and decentralized developments making the car indispensable results. The author provides examples of successful land use planning which made town centers attractive and accessible via public transit and bicycle. The author notes that it is too early to tell if the government of the United Kingdom will bring about a new attitude to transport and land use planning.
