Title: The importance of parking policy for sustainable transport and land use city planning
Abstract: The planned growth of Australiars city centres will be dependent on increasing the transport system capacity, whilst reducing daily car travel. Twenty years ago, many property developers, planners and elected officials were concerned that parking policies to restrain car access could have a detrimental impact on the city economy. Case studies have shown that parking policies, introduced as part of an integrated transport and land use strategy, have been effective in reducing both the growth of parking and traffic over a period of 10 to 15 years. During this time these cities have experienced strong economic growth. There is no evidence that parking restraint policies have had any detrimental impact on the growth of city centres or their economy. Indeed the opposite is likely to be the case. Parking restraint policies are now recognised as appropriate and essential policy tools to manage traffic demand in city centres.
