Title: CITY OF PHOENIX ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Abstract: The City of Phoenix, Arizona was a pioneer in early central control systems with an innovative system in the mid-1970s, which has worked well for the past 20 years. As the City was a pioneer in that effort, they now are implementing a new concept of computerized traffic signal system which provides distributed intelligence using NEMA TS-2 controllers of multiple manufacturers. This is accomplished through the National Traffic Control ITS Communications Protocol (NTCIP). Phoenix will integrate the new controllers with a brand new traffic operations center that will employ the latest computer hardware and software along with a pilot CCTV surveillance system. This paper highlights the particular choices that the design team faced in arriving at the chosen design concept.
