Title: SIGNAL TIMING TO MEET PEAK LOAD OF TRAFFIC DEMANDS
Abstract: The article describes the problem of traffic signal timing to meet traffic demands, especially during periods of peak loads. The article provides examples of solutions tried in Detroit, Michigan. Flexibility is needed to set the timing because of the differing traffic volumes on a major street at different times of the day. Experience has shown that the most efficient handling of traffic will be obtained by using the shortest possible cycle consistent with traffic volumes entering the intersection. Intersections that are more complex can be controlled better by using a traffic density actuated controller. Visibility of signals can also have a bearing on traffic flow.
