Title: Combining Signal Group Oriented Control with Guaranteed Green Waves
Abstract: An important consideration for traffic light control algorithms is the trade-off between flexibility and guaranteeing green waves. The extremes of the control spectrum are fixed-time control configured for green waves on one end, and vehicle actuated control without any communication with neighbouring intersections on the other end. The current paper examines situations in which the benefits of green waves and vehicle actuated flexibility are combined as much as possible, by extending an adaptive traffic responsive traffic control system that creates dynamic coordination based on arrival patterns, with an algorithm that calculates guaranteed network-wide green waves for it. This algorithm results in a reduction of time lost of 10.1% for all traffic, and 9.6% less stops for motorized traffic. Observation of the simulation also shows that the addition of speed advice at the beginning of the green wave can lead to a much higher reduction in stops.
