Abstract: This is an overview of computer applications appropriate to small libraries - those institutions without the funding or staff to implement large, comprehensive systems. The author sketches out a general description of essential elements involved in automating aspects of library work as he describes the characteristics and capabilities of automated products and services in six broad application areas: circulation control, descriptive cataloging, online catalogue access, reference service, acquisitions and serials control, and library administration. The discussion briefly indicates the scope of automation and describes prevalent approaches in each area, citing examples of representative products and services where appropriate.
