Title: HOW TO SET FARES FOR REGIONAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Abstract: Since regional public transport operates in rural areas where population is generally low, demand is also relatively low and diffuse, and often accompanied by an increased use of the private car and a lower user of public transport. Public transport offer in rural areas sometimes takes on alternative forms, such as a demand responsive service. In that respect, in regional public transport, it is often difficult to secure a high degree of cost coverage. This article provides an overview of price and tariff related issues in regional public transport. The information used is based on the work of UITP working group Pricing and Tariff Systems for Regional Public Transport and is illustrated with the experience of De Lijn, Belgium.
