Abstract: This paper focuses on three issues that are relevant to cost and efficiency savings necessitated by the current UK economic situation. These are the growing levels of public subsidy to maintain the present system; contributions to the efficiency of track renewals and reducing the capital cost of new infrastructure. It concludes by posing some questions about the future of UK railways in the context of a new government committed to radical reductions in public spending.
