Abstract: Athens International Airport has been in operation since March 2001. The demonstrated results of this public-private collaboration scheme are due in part to the vision and efforts of a team of young, highly trained professionals. These are presented by the author - namely trying to turn a key public service into a profitable enterprise (its profitability equaled 124.8 million Euros in 2007) while running it with operational credibility and excellence. The airport provides ample capacity, especially airside, as well as 24-hour operations. It attempts to minimize or prevent adverse environmental impacts to the areas that surround it. Its goals become higher every year, but this practice is seen as essential to progress. Issues of importance include creating stakeholder value, operational excellence, quality passenger service delivery, and strong traffic growth.
