Title: Turkish state rail: past, present and future
Abstract: Turkish state railways (TCDD) celebrates its 150th Foundation Anniversary in 2006. The history of the railway network in Turkey from 1856 to the present is outlined. The increased investment in the railway system has been targeted at fast train projects, improvements of the existing system, reconstruction and privatisation. Details are given of the investment made in the railways in the years 2003-2006. The following railway projects are outlined: high speed train lines connecting Ankara-Istanbul, Ankara-Konya, Ankara-Sivas and Bursa-Ayazma-Osmaneli; the Kars-Tibilisi railway project; the Batum-Turkey railway connection; the Hopa-Batum railway project; and the Van Lake North Crossing Project.
