Abstract: Turkish State Railways (TCDD) is Turkey's national railway system. The nation's road traffic is often nightmarish, so the government of Turkey is exploring the use of rail for traffic mitigation. The first new line of an almost 3,000 km high-speed rail network, a 533 km line linking Istanbul and Ankara, is scheduled to open in early 2009. This will mark a major long-distance rail travel transformation in Turkey. Planning and construction of various lines and projects are discussed. A box details Turkish high-speed projects.
