Title: INNOVATIONS IN DESIGN, EVALUATION AND MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS
Abstract: This paper details the current situation of pavement management in India and developments to improve this. The geography of India covers many different climate and soil conditions and the road network varies in condition and management. Present pavement design is inadequate and the authors recommend the use of an analytical approach, to be validated by feedback on performance. Standardization is considered in design, evaluation and maintenance. Design standards need to take into account heavy axle load. Field testing standards for design of overlays are being developed. A maintenance management approach is developed to consider deflection, roughness, rutting and cracking, traffic volume and axle loading: maintenance decisions can be based on the needs of different aspects of road condition. Proper quality control and judicious use of materials will lead to greater durability and reduced costs. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116046.
