Abstract: This article discusses light rail transit (LRT) proposals for Dublin during the period 1990-92, and includes a map of the proposed routes. The article describes: (1) public discussions about the possibility of LRT systems in Dublin; (2) the geography of Dublin; (3) light rail proposals for Dublin; (4) characteristics of an optimal LRT system for Dublin. In 1990, two LRT schemes were submitted: (1) the Ansaldo Light Rail project; and (2) the Irish Rail scheme. A proposal for a specific route was prepared by Professor Simon Perry and his students, and a full-scale Ansaldo scheme was later revealed. These proposals have been considered by various Irish government departments, and are probably still being assessed by them. There is a hierarchy of questions to be addressed by them, and their answers will be awaited with interest, not only in Dublin. In an optimal system, a first group of routes would be placed on former railway rights of way, and a second group would cover areas needing better public transport. Traffic forecasts would be realistic and preferably conservative. Other aspects considered would include: (1) street operation; (2) phasing of construction; (3) city centre links; (4) gauge; (5) operator(s); and (6) the effects upon the environment.
