Abstract: An examination and comparison of the torque and slipping characteristics, and the starting performance of electric locomotives and diesel-hydraulics are made. The accepted adhe sion value for rigid-frame coupled axle locomotives is 0.33 and for the truck locomotive is 0.30. This article suggests that a coefficient of 0.37, which is commonly adopted for the electric locomotive, might be more correct. Notchless control is suggested to improve the starting performance of the diesel hydraulic.
