Title: MANAGING ASSETS WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND : A COUNTY MAINTENANCE ENGINEER MAKES A CASE FOR ASSET MANAGEMENT
Abstract: This article presents an argument in favor of utilizing asset management systems (AMS) to assist counties in developing preventative maintenance plans. The benefits include cheaper cost of preventative maintenance over repair and replacement, accessible organization of information, and greater objectivity. While an AMS might be useful, it is only the first step in an effective maintenance strategy. In addition, a road maintenance manager should also maintain sound facilities, develop a proactive maintenance plan, predict facility performance, communicate with the customer, and put aside funds for preventative maintenance.
