Abstract: The City of Philadelphia is quickly becoming a bicycle-oriented city. Beginning with the formation of a Bicycle Safety Task Force in 1992, Philadelphia has responded to the needs of bicyclists by providing an infrastructure to support this alternative means of transportation. ISTEA and TEA-21 have furnished the federal funds to plan and build the infrastructure, which currently consists of more than 130 miles of bike lane streets and over 1000 bicycle parking racks. This presentation discusses the development of the Philadelphia Bicycle Network Plan, installation of facilities, and examples of solutions to some of the problems encountered.
