Title: SOME EXAMPLES OF UNDERGROUND DEVELOPMENT IN EUROPE
Abstract: As a contribution to the formation of British policy on underground road junctions, the article describes six such junctions in the cities of Brussels, Essen, Rome and Paris. The place Louise scheme in Brussels is of interest because of the high percentage of turning traffic catered for between the main radial and inner ring roads that meet there. Rond Point Schuman, also in Brussels, provides for interchange between two road routes and a metro station. Turning tunnels have a minimum 50 m radius and a maximum 7.2 percent grade. The reyers scheme is a four level facility, road and rail links being carried in the same cut and cover tunnels. The planning decisions leading to the construction of one kilometer of underground urban motorway again combined with a railway in the German City of Essen are discussed; this is compared with a similar scheme, the Piazzale Di Porta Pia in Rome. In both cases, the article points out, the visual intrusion of surface works dictated an underground solution. The Paris scheme described is at La Defense. Here the underground transport facilities are planned as an integral part of a comprehensive redevelopment project. /TRRL/
